PROS
  • Strictly enforces most of OMG SysML syntax and semantics (see CONS for exceptions)
  • Enterprise edition bundles Cameo Simulation Toolkit (otherwise must buy separately)
  • Supports plugins for integration with Requirements Management tools (e.g., DOORS, RequisitePro)
CONS
  • Suffers from tool featuritis and UX is gratuitously complex (needs extreme makeover)
  • Activity diagrams are awkward to nest
  • Sequence diagrams do not properly support semantics of Interfaces and Signals
  • Tool is relatively expensive, and cost of plugins (DataHub, DoDAF, etc.) is excessive
  • XMI interoperability does not work as advertised with competitive tools
BOTTOM LINE
  • Recommended as a pragmatic SysML modeling tool that supports Agile MBSE and intermediate-level model simulations.

Review: Cameo Systems Modeler - SysML & MBSE Support

  • Product Name: Cameo Systems Modeler
  • Brand: DS CATIA / No Magic

  • Review Summary

Cameo Systems Modeler (Cameo) is a robust Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tool that strictly enforces most of OMG SysML's syntax and semantics, and offers support for basic requirements traceability, intermediate model-based simulation, and automated document generation. The Enterprise edition includes a Simulation Toolkit, and plugins are available for selected Requirements Management tool integration (e.g., DOORS, RequisitePro) and enterprise architecture frameworks (e.g., DoDAF 2, MODAF).

Shortcomings include, but are not limited to: unintuitive and gratuitously complex UX, Activity diagrams do not nest cleanly, Sequence diagrams do not properly support Interface and Signal semantics, and dysfunctional XMI interoperability.

Recommended as a pragmatic SysML modeling tool that supports Agile MBSE and intermediate model simulations.
