PROS
  • Provides a good overview of the OMG SysML diagrams with relatively high technical accuracy;
  • Author's writing style is engaging and understandable by technically lightweight project managers as well as heavyweight system engineers.
CONS
  • SysML presentation is more "marketecture" evangelism than "tarchitecture" rigorous;
  • SysML examples tend to be simplistic or academic;
  • Fails to address serious SE application issues including; system analysis & design patterns, architecture scalability, architecture integrity, and Modeling & Simulation (ModSim);
  • Insufficient SysML learning resource to understand how to apply SysML to real-world system-of-systems architectures.
BOTTOM LINE
'SysML Distilled' is the best SysML primer currently available; it is a small book that provides a quick introduction to the purpose, syntax (notation), and semantics of SysML's nine diagrams and Allocation tables. However, its SysML examples tend to be simplistic or academic, and its presentation of SysML is more 'marketecture' evangelism than 'tarchitecture' rigor. Consquently, serious Systems Engineers will find that it fails to address serious SE application issues including; system analysis & design patterns, architecture scalability, architecture integrity, and Modeling & Simulation (ModSim).

'SysML Distilled' is recommended as an OMG SysML digram primer as long as you understand its technical limitations. You should seek a more robust SysML learning resource prior to applying SysML to real-world system-of-systems architectures.
